After having problems to start the engine on my 1997 Ford Ranger I switched the fuel pump relays around, checked the fuses, replaced the fuel filter but before connecting the line that comes from the gas tank to the filter I placed the hose into a bottle and turned the starter switch on and the pump turned on for about 3 seconds delivering some fuel to the bottle but the pump never stayed on. I need to know what's the easiest way to replace the fuel pump. I heard that the cargo unit must be removed instead of lowering the gas tank, is this correct?

At the dealership fellows remove the bed of the truck but have a lift or man power to do it. Dropping the tank to replace the pump is about a 2 hour job.
I removed my bed. I just removed the 6 bolts in the bed and inched it back about 2 feet with absolutely no help. Remove the 2 fuel lines that are held on by clips, remove the electrical connector and ring and the whole assembly comes out.
