Hi - Dave here, contributing to RepairPal and providing expert advice since 2010. Your 1996 Ranger has either the 3.0L V6, the 4.0L OHC V6 or the 4.0L OHV V6 engine. 3 distinctly unique engines. As I do not know which one specifically is in your Ranger, it does make it a little harder to weigh in. Generally speaking - it sounds like you could have an engine misfire that occurs intermittently depending on engine load, you could have an air intake issue or maybe also a transmission issue.. Hands on testing is needed to drill down to the root cause of the problem so that it may be resolved. https://repairpal.com/auto-repair-near-me Click the link to find some shops near you who can help out!
