Hi - Dave here, contributing to RepairPal and providing expert advice since 2010. Tell me more about what the transmission is doing. Many of the transmissions of this vintage throttle valve cable that when disconnected or out of adjustment can negatively affect shifting of the transmission. Speed sensors can figure in, but this 1990 model unit is very unlikely to be electronically controlled. There's a vacuum modulator as well that when faulty can affect transmission shifting. Hands-on testing is needed. https://repairpal.com/auto-repair-near-me Click the link to find some shops near you who can help out!
