How do I Give my 1990 2.9 xlt 4wheel drive system maintenance

I engaged the 4 wheel drive and it had a funky smell I’m sure it hadn’t been used in years I’m wondering how I can give it maintenance , I saw a box in the hood but not sure what liquids if any go in it
