What is your question?
I am fairly vehicle illiterate when it comes to engines, i got this off a friend he said something was wrong with the Distributor, when i looked it over, the distributor was fine, i got the Hanes book on it, and figured it was the ICM, replaced that, and then i kicked up a storm, but didn't start. Now, it doesn't seem to want to do anything, its just lazy i think. But, the main problem is, when i hook it up to be jumped the spark plugs don't fire, when i use just the battery, disconnected from the jumper car, they do, what the heck? When i would try to start it, it just kicked and kicked before, and just today, nothing, didn't even seem to want to try to kick this time. Any help would be greatly appreciated, i am in the dark, i want to get it to run before i go out and buy two new tires to replace the slashed ones... sold to me as is... lol. This vehicle is a pain in the rear, so many electrical dependencies that it makes a simple fuel filter replacement an adventure. i am hoping on using this car to fulfill my goal of a road trip to my pals in Tennessee, but it needs some TLC now. Please, if you know something and would like to contact me right away, instant message me at: Aim - JediKamikazi2142 Kamikazi21424 Yahoo - Kamikazi2142 Anything is accepted here, i am out of options, i would like to get it fixed on my own, but if not, Auto Repair shop here i come.

Hey Kamikazi, Check the battery terminals and cables really well, it's possible when you are connecting the jumper cables you are altering the battery cable connections. But it still doesn't start when jumping the car, so there is likely something more happening. These types of problems can be quite difficult to diagnose. Even when you have years of experience addressing similar problem, one can appear that makes you pull your hair out. I don't know if that is your situation, but you never know until the problem has been found and fixed. The skills needed to measure the input and output signals from sensors and control modules, read wiring diagrams and understand a complex electrical diagnosis are probably out of your range. If you can afford it, take it to a shop and have them check it out. You can have them perform a safety inspection of the vehicle as well since you plan on driving it across country. Thanks for all the comments and support in the Q&A! Bret
Hi Kamakazi. Try this. Remove battery cables. Clean off all corrosion from cables and posts. This will take care of spark no spark when jump starting. Most spark plugs look rusted due to tan color. If the plugs are black(carbon buildup),you might try cleaning them up. You didn't say if the car was running when you bought it. If it was, chances are its not the plugs. Even if one plug is defective, it will still run on 3 cylinders(albeit runs rough). As far as engine oil goe's, by now, you have contaminated the motor oil. Do an oil & filer change. It couldn't hurt to buy new plugs. They usually come pregapped from the factory, or have your local auto parts gap them for you(some parts houses will). STP oil treatment is a good product, but not intended to be used for dissipating fuel in the crankcase. How did your friend determine it was a distributor problem? Leave your spark plugs out for a day, or if you have access to an air compressor, try blowing air into all cylinders. Wear saftey glasses before you do this. After you replaced the ICM, did you notice any difference in performance good or worse? Hope you find this helpfull. Goodluck
well, you see, i know how to read electrical diagrams, the whole diagnostics thing is foreign to me, the car is on two good tires and the driver side tires are slashed (on the side wall) so i cant just drive over to a mechanic and get it fixed. Furthermore, i was an idiot and forgot to reconnect the throttle control systems wires after i replaced the fuel filter, now i am back to the sputtering kick of the engine. could the gap of the spark plugs be off? and, what can i do about a flooded engine. should i leave the spark plugs out for a while? and let the fuel evaporate? second, should i get new spark plugs if they are fouled or slightly rusted? and by slightly i mean barely a thin layer of rust. thanks for seeing my post Bret. i am on edge here, the MK-1 wants to start but can't.
If the engine is flooded and the plugs fouled then you should at least dry out the plugs (preferable to replace though). The cylinders need to be dried out and may need to replace the oil as well since it may be filled with raw fuel. This will not fix the problem of the engine flooding, that may still need to be addressed. I cannot go into all the possibilities of what can cause flooding, but start with the ignition system, if the plugs are not firing, try to address that first. Or, you may need to get the tires fixed first and then drive it to a shop. Good Luck!
i figure it was from trying to start it without spark all those times, now, it sputters so much i am sure its close to starting, i unplugged the spark plugs they have been out for a few hours now, i think i will give it more time though, the spark plugs were still wet with fuel, i dunno how much is in there, but i hope i don't need an oil change over it, can an STP oil treatment fix that problem?
oh hey, btw, i have a server up in teamspeak "1994 Ford Probe" its the only one, so i can walk you through whats going on easier, let me know if you are interested, its a free download at Teamspeak.com (client download) if you do go to get it, don't get the download with the red texts under it, saying "updated executable" it doesn't work for some reason. just so this way you can hear the engine for your self.
