Why am I having problems charging my battery?

I tried to put a charger on the car and had the following happen; 1 back up ligh started to blink, the license plate light came on, 1 front parking light came on. The top motor sounded like it was running, the horn was honking. I connected the charger to the battery, red to red and black to black then to the frame. If I disconnect the battery from the car and try to charge it all seems to be fine. Please can you help?
