what can cause a ticking noise from the engine?

First things I think of are an exhaust leak where the manifold connects to the cylinder head, and a valve lifter or camshaft problem making noise under the valve cover. Cam vaser limiters they constantly are adjusting your timing to keep the cams adjusted so the valves don't punch a hole in the piston....Ford wasn't thinking much when they made these triton engines but they make alota noise with age almost like a lifter ticking
