the gas gauge on my 04 mustang reads empty, today it has circled past F to E

the gas gauge has read empty for the last 3 months, i filled it a few days ago and ran almost the whole tank through. today it read 1/4 when i started it, it read 1/2 after idrove it 10 miles, it read 3/4 after i parked it and started it again. i filled it,( it was really close to empty by the gallons i put in) it jumped up past empty, i turned it off to see if it would reset, when i turned it back on it went further past F, i repeated 2 more times and the needle is just below E

Hello, you have a concern with the wiring to or from the fuel sending unit, or a problem with the sending unit itself.
Testing is quite helpful using a diagnostic tool where you can actually actively command the gauge with various fuel levels to make sure the gauge is responding properly using the instrument cluster module and wiring. The diagnostic tool will also show where the sending unit is positioned, relative to the fuel in the tank, and give you a sense of the fuel level that is being measured -- accurately or not.
