Overheating occurs quickly when driving short distance, loud rattling noise begins when pushing accelerator only as temp climbs then when gauge reaches highest level it shuts off . Has water and oil,but oil was really low.Has smell and A little smoke when raised hood.Already has a rack and pinion leak and bad ignition computer, but don't know if that is relevant or related.told could be related to the head or engine going bad.know zero about cars and no money for professional diagnoses but ANY opinion would be greatly appreciated to know at least a starting point

This happened to me. What was wrong with mine was that the clips that mount on to the ignition module have a gap. I washed the motor one day and got a little water in the contact causing it to misfire. That's why it overheated on me plus I got the smoke and smell from the car like you described. . The way I fixed is by disconnecting the leads and cleaning out all the water on the contacts with compressor air blower and paper towels. Once I removed all the water and made sure it was completely dry. Connected the leads and it fired up great. If you don't have a compressor you can is caned air or starting fluid to blow out the liquid. Starting fluid will evaporate but do it out side with the engine off.
