It shifts late quite frequently and shift into reverse and drive fairly hard

The issue described sounds like a throttle valve cable maladjustment. A pressure test gauge attached to the transmission should be used to correctly set TV valve pressure. At least the maladjustment won't burn-up the transmission due to lack of pressure. It may have been maladjusted by someone who didn't know what they were doing or made to mask a failing transmission.
