Hello, if the engine is "knocking" it cool be too late to do anything here. Overheating is bad for an engine. Excessive heat can cause so much damage internally to an engine. General causes for cooling system failure would be: thermostat sticking, engine cooing fan not working when needed and air pockets in the cooling system.
