It opened fine, then I filled the trunk with luggage and when I arrived the trunk would only open half way. I checked to see if the hinges were blocked and didn't see anything. Could it have anything to do with the emergency pull cord?

Hello, The torsion bars for the trunk lid go all the way across the roof of the trunk, between the hinges. They provide the force needed to raise the trunk lid, and they can be damaged if you pack the trunk too full. Look and see if one is bent, or if there is something interfering with their natural position. Likely one is bent, and when it tries to untwist it hits the rear cowl (roof of the trunk). You can unbend it without causing damage in most cases.
