Shifter will not engage transmission. Shifter just "slides" through positions

What is your question?

As i said above, the shifter will not engage any of the gear positions. It just "slides" through them and does not lock into any position.

What makes this problem better or worse?

Just started happening yesterday. Car stranded in driveway
