What is your question?
Hello, My Steering Shaft won't reach the bottom shaft near the floor/firewall. My ac on my 2008 ford focus had a leak, which I tracked to the evaporator. I took on the job and removed both seats the middle console as well as the gear shift and finally the dashboard as a whole. I was using a video in which he removed the whole dash with the steering wheel included. He had me disconnect the steering shaft at the base where the bolt was holding it in right before the firewall/floor. After reassembling the AC box and putting the Dash in the steering shaft wont reach the bottom receiver. There's about an inch remaining. The key never went back in the ignition and the steering wheel remains locked. The only difference between my job and his was my car was on ramps rather than jack stands. Does this seem like a steering wheel issue or something below the floor with the steering? Maybe I hit the steering shaft and broke something in the wheel? Any help would be great!

Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! It sounds like you've tackled a pretty extensive job there! The issue with the steering shaft not reaching the lower section can stem from a few things. Since you disconnected the steering shaft, it’s possible that it was inadvertently misaligned during reassembly. Make sure the upper and lower sections of the shaft are properly aligned; sometimes, they can come out of phase if twisted or misaligned. The fact that the steering wheel is locked and the key won't turn could suggest that the steering column is not fully seated or aligned properly, which might also keep the ignition lock from releasing. Check to see if there's any movement in the column itself. If the column isn’t fully secured or has been displaced, that could prevent the shaft from connecting properly. Since you mentioned using ramps instead of jack stands, it’s also worth checking that the angle of the steering column hasn't changed, affecting the alignment. If you’ve double-checked everything and it still won’t budge, you may want to consult a professional to ensure there’s no hidden damage to the steering mechanism.
