ford focus 2001 se the gear with the exclamation light came temp was still cool

I was driving and then the warning light the one looks like the gear with the exclamation in the middle came on and when the light came on then my car died out. I put in park and started it up again and it did start and yet the temperature gage was still in the cold section. then next morning I started car and then popped the hood checked the reservoir and it was full then when I shut the hood my car died out. I started up it started drove down the road and I came to speed bump and as I went over my car just died out put it in park it would not kick over waited few minutes my car started so I went little further turned around to come home and as I went over the bump it died out put it in park started it up and just drove home what can be causing this to happen this is the first time this lite has come on and my temperature gage is in the cool area it isn't even half way it is more to the beginning of the cool side
