Why does the temp gauge go from cool to red hot within 2 mis of driving on the road

When I started it it had a squeaky sound for a while and it smoked a little and it was driving fine for about 15 mins then started over heating it had been doing it for a while but not this bad so I stopped driving it for a while until it cooled and started it up and after only 2 mins of being on the road the badge went from completely cool to completely hot in only 2 mins of driving and there was a knocking sound coming from where I put the water in.

What makes this problem better or worse?
