We bought the car in april. 2006 ford five hundred. They said it just needed charged which they did. It didn''t work. Now the shop is telling us the compressor needs replaced. That is has a high side and a low side. And it will cost $1200. Don't know who to believr.

They told me at the Ford House that the Compressor going out was a very well known and common problem with the 500s. If the compressor is bad it will throw metal into the Dryer receiver and expansion valve. This results in warm air in town driving and cold air when on the highway. If you are one of the lucky ones and the compressor isn't bad then it is the Scroll valve in the compressor that causing the problems. It's a $30 part and easy to replace, but an A/C repair man will have to do it. If you do have a bad compressor then don't have the Ford house replace it. You can get a compressor from a parts store or the internet for around $250-500. Be sure to change the Receiver and expansion valve to. Receiver is around $80 and valve around $20
try local trusted independent shops for more opinions,before spending that kind of money!

The compressor kicks in, not sure on the clutch spinning and yes it blows cold air when going at higher speeds, but when you slow down it blows hot air.

But is is scary. Don't know if my husband would be up to it. He has never been very mechanically inclined. But thanks for the info.

yes,i hope they got it fixed.there's a lot of complaints about that.and you are correct on the scroll valve.that's the part number i listed in my answer above,v001.
