what does speed sensor read off of inside rear end

abs light comes on when you shift gears, speedometer drops to 0 then comes right back up, rear brakes overheat, abs light comes on when going uphill. changed speed sensor but did not help. put a duralast sensor in it
What makes this problem better or worse?
when shifting gears, going uphill, pulling a load. its a 6 speed straight shift
