ONLY ONE THING controls engine temperature > *THERMOSTAT** That all I can tell you.

With engine at normal operating temperature > Grasp BOTH heater hoses - BOTH hoses should be HOT - - as hot as the upper radiator hose is.. Post results here: IF concerned at all about attempting this test - seek qualified *hands-on* assistance.
