why does my transmission jump to third at a dead stop and wont change gears?

my truck will start good in the morning but later on sitting at a redlight it will jump to 3rd and then 5th gear and wont fix its self until i turn the truck off but now it is doing it more frequent and the wrench came up on my dash and check engine light. i barley made it home in 3rd gear today
