Why does my ac comp. turn on for 4-5 seconds then off for 2-3 minutes?

When I turn on the ac of my 2010 Ford F 150XLT (Crew Cab) the compressor seems to cycle. It runs for 2-3 seconds then stops running for 2-3 minutes. During the time it is running there is a noticeable drop in the temperature at the vent.

There could be a concern with the compressor itself, the coil or clutch of the compressor. System pressures could be at issue due to a restriction. There could be a problem with the cycle switch or high pressure cut off switch. Testing hands on is required.
