Quick question, if setting the pinion preload can be torqued using a regular torque wrench or I have to buy a special torqometer? Trying to save pennies here…

Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! When it comes to setting the pinion preload on your F-150, precision is key. While a regular torque wrench is great for many tasks, setting the pinion preload typically requires a torque meter, also known as an inch-pound torque wrench or torqometer. This tool is designed to measure the rotational torque needed to turn the pinion, ensuring the preload is set correctly. Using a regular torque wrench might not give you the accuracy you need, and an improperly set preload can lead to premature bearing wear or noise. Investing in the right tool might save you more in the long run compared to potential damage from incorrect preload settings.
