Hello!! My 2010 F150 5.6L 3V engine makes a raspy knocking noise (sounds like a diesel engine) when in drive at low speeds, 5 to 15 mph, not all the time but more often than not after driving on the freeway for about 20 or so minutes. Sometimes there's a light ticking sound in the engine when I start up the truck, but only sometimes. I did just recently had the spark plugs changed and I have been back since to make sure they were in snug and tight. The mechanic said they were. I've started using higher octane gas for 3 tank fulls now but I'm still having that knocking noise. I didn't have any over heating issues but I decided to open the radiator cap and found the fluid to be clumpy about 1 or 2 inches down inside the radiator tube. Does this have anything to do with the raspy knocking noise at low speed? Should I replace the radiator?
How long has your 2010 Ford F-150 had this problem?
for about 4 weeks now

I'm sure you have a 5.4L 3 valve engine and not a 5.6L. maybe you mean a ticking noise instead of a knocking noise? If so,then it's most likely that you have a cracked or warped exhaust manifold. Also if you have clumpy coolant in the radiator, then it's running through you engine also,so you need to get that checked ASAP!
Thank you so much 1clubinside!!
Yes 1clubinside, you are correct. It's a 5.4L (sorry!). It is a ticking sound when I first start the truck and the engine is just idling but, definitely a knocking sound when decelerating my speed down to a stop (right at about 5 to 15 mph). It sounds just like if you were to take a wrench and start banging it on the engine mount. Definitely loud knocking. Which stops as soon as I come to a complete stop and then it just idles (with that ticking sound).
ok,so you have an exhaust manifold leak/crack and it will get worse. as far as the knocking,it's not a rod knocking because that don't quit. it's external somewhere? could be a heat shield, drive shaft or the ceramic cone inside a converter broken loose(had this happen on my F150,sounds like a rod knocking),it could be a number of things. best to get it on a lift to try and see if anything is loose, also get someone(mechanic)to drive it to try and identify the problem if you can't locate it. good luck.
