What part does the instrument cluster play in starting the truck?

Tip of ignition lock cylinder broke, so replaced it. Had to replace the PATS transceiver due to damaging it during the process of getting the broken piece out. Truck will roll over but won't start. Was told by locksmith that it was either the instrument cluster or the computer. The mileage light on the cluster has been going out but it never affected the starting until this happened.
