Worn or improperly greased bearings can cause a lot of heat. Check them for wear and make sure they’re well lubricated. If they look bad, it’s time to replace them. Another thing could be the hub assembly or the axle; make sure everything is aligned and not causing friction. Even if the brakes are backed off, a stuck parking brake or caliper can still generate heat, so double-check those too.
