Hello, the most common cause of the transmission shift lever not coming out of the park position is that the transmission shift lever does not see the brake pedal engaged. This can be for a few reasons, but most often, the brake light switch at the pedal is faulty or out of adjustment. Hands on testing here is needed - do the brake lights illuminate when pressing the brake pedal each time? If no, this is a big clue as to where to start looking. https://repairpal.com/auto-repair-near-me Click the link or call us at 877-913-1554. Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! When your Explorer starts but won’t shift out of park, and the tailgate won't open with the key, it’s likely an electrical issue. It could be a problem with the brake light switch, as the transmission interlock relies on it to release from park. Check if your brake lights come on when you press the pedal. If they don't, you may have a faulty switch. The tailgate issue might be a related electrical problem or a blown fuse, so check your fuses and relays too.
