Hello, I’m Pete from the Car Genius team at RepairPal. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this concern on your Explorer. Based on the information provided it does sound like there is an internal fault with the transmission itself causing this concern. This type of fault can be caused by an internal mechanical issue, a hydraulic fluid flow concern, or even an issue with an electrical solenoid. It is difficult to determine from here which component is causing this concern and the best thing to have done is to have your vehicle inspected and tested by a reputable repair facility where they can provide an accurate diagnosis and then let you know which repair is needed. I wish I had some better news to give you on this. If you’d like to find a trusted, certified repair shop in your area, you can check here: https://repairpal.com/certified.
