then shut off and then I turn on again and it seems ok - I put in a new battery but I dont' know if it is the alternator or what- I don't want to waste money on the alternator if it is something else - can it be the voltage switch and is that expensive - this is driving me crazy!!

M having exactly the same problem as you. My explorer 06 while on the road suddenly the engine dies and check charging system comes on and after waiting about 15seconds and turning the ignition the engine starts again as nothing happened. If u had found a solution kindly help me out with this
Check that the battery connections are clean tight and secure. Turn on the ignition switch to the on but not run position do you see an icon on the instrument panel representing a battery, if you do not see this battery icon the alternator is not seeing power to allow it to charge. Start the engine does the battery icon go out.Put a volt meter across the battery terminals with the engine off, at rest the battery voltage should be 12.6 volts if the battery is fully charged. Now get a friend to start the car while you watch the voltmeter, the voltage reading across the battery should read approximately 14.6 volts if the alternator is charging correctly.
The battery is brand new got it 2 weeks ago. The dashboard lights that I get is the battery, oil and check charging systems on it. When I put the key in and before I start the car I always get all the lights lite including the battery light. The one thing that puzzles is that when it shuts down I pull over and then it starts up again and I am able to go where I need too. We are taking it to the dealer tomorrow but my problem is that I don't trust them and they charge so much for the work to be done. This car in the last 2 months has costed me $1,000. This is my 3rd Explorer and it is the only one I have had this much problems with.
Had a customer come in complaining with the same symptoms on a 2007 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L. After a bit of troubleshooting found the Harmonic Balancer center rubber damper is coming apart and allowing the voltage to have slow drops when it was slipping. Even affected the power steering when it was first started until the balancer heated up from slipping. Check the Harmonic Balancer closely and watch the rotations of all the pulleys while it running. Should be able to see the belt rotation slow down and sometimes just about stop.
Ok so I have a 07 that's been doing this now ur all going to be happy I have found out what is going on the ground wire connector from the alternator was bad it had came off just enough to send that code now that I changed it it's been over 7 months n still not came back on a 25$ fix if it wasn't for advance auto parts guy checking my battery and alternator would never have figured it out bc he started to push on that wire while I was in the cab so hope your guys is just the same
I have a 2007 as well, V8 4.6l. I replaced the battery and the alternator recently and that check charging system still comes on. I’m going to have to do a little more digging. I wish it was as simple as a ground. I will be checking that as well in the next couple days. Thanks for the heads up.
