My Explorer "whines" loudly on the road. I thought the tires were pitching the noise, but they are relatively new and I rotated them and no noise abatment. Could this sound be signaling more signifcant drive chain issues... differential? I've driven the vehicle 1500 miles in just the past week and nothing has broken down, just noise.

Unfortunately, you may be on the right track. The rear differentials on these vehicles have a track record of having a whine from the ring and pinion. There is a technical service bulletin that addresses this noise (05-23-03). There is a revised ring and pinion kit to repair the noise. However, noises are always tricky and I hesitate to through confidence behind this particular "web diagnosis". I would always suggest a qualified technician hear your noise first hand and determine what may be causing it from a first hand opinion. https://repairpal.com/ford-repair-in-louisville-kentucky There are some shops near you that you may consult. Good luck!
I had same issue. Took it in to dealership and they checked out whole drive train. It was wheel bearings. Repaired and no noise now at all.
