How would I go about changing the oil pan gasket on my 2000 Ford Explorer?

Its been leaking for a while. My brother in law claims I would have to pull the whole engine to change it, but I'm skeptical. I trust that boy's advice like I trust a black widow not to eat a cricket. Ever since I got the truck it has been nothing but a hole in my pocket the oil pan gasket is the latest of things to go wrong with it. Thanks for any and all help!!!
