I have the opportunity to buy a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT with 160,000 miles on it. The vehicle seems to be in very good condition, he has had it inspected a number of times and it checked out great. It has a 4.0 V-6 that sounds great, i was just wondering if this would be a dependable vehicle to last me a few years at least.

have on myself.make sure the wheel bearings in front end have been replaced near 100,00 miles.mine is very reliable.
Do not know about the 4.0, but my 96 5.0 has 163,000 and is like new, full power, tight tranny, great compression, hardly any service.
I currently own a 96 explorer xlt, with the v6 4.0. Mine has over 289,000 miles on it. As long as the truck has been well maintained and taken care of it should be a good truck, always check for any paper work you can on the maintnence of the truck.
My '96 5.0 has 130,000 on the clock and runs like new. Never had any problems. Just routine maintenance and front ball joints and wheel bearings. Take care of it and it will take care of you.
