Input front trans seal
1 Reply
Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Unfortunately, on your 1996 Ford Explorer, the transmission and transfer case share a tight marriage—you can’t remove the transmission alone to replace the input seal without first separating the transfer case. The transfer case bolts directly to the back of the transmission, so it has to come off to access the seal. It’s not as bad as it sounds. Once the driveshafts and crossmember are out, the transfer case can be unbolted and slid back. After that, you’ll have clear access to the transmission for the input seal swap. Make sure to inspect the transfer case input seal while you're at it—no sense tearing it apart twice!
