If the speed sensor is mounted on the rear of the transmission tail shaft, then the tail shaft bushing may be getting worn out and causing the shaft to walk around, as the vehicle is under load and then is not under load. As the shaft moves, it forces the driven gear up against the speed sensor gear and wipes it out. I have seen this problem on many vehicles. I hope that this will shed some light.
