can a bad computer cause a vehicle to stop working while in operation?

I have a 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. I have had a mechanic hook up a computer to get back error codes. It returned 27 error codes and the mechanic believes it is a computer failure. The initial problem was that while driving, the vehicle would "shut down" while in motion. Power would remain, I would just lose acceleration and the power steering would no longer work. Would a bad computer cause this to happen? It (the onboard computer) was recently refurbished for the exact same reason so if this can indeed cause the problem then perhaps they didn't fix it properly?
