The fuel gauge on my 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac was on empty, however, it took only 9.506 gallons to fill up (tank holds 23.4 gallons). After "fill-up" the fuel gauge remained on Empty and the CHECK GAUGE light was still on, why? Note: My Sport Trac is registering 259,456 miles; I am the only owner. How long has your 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac had this problem?
4-5 weeks
David this is typically caused by a failed in tank fuel level sending unit - however it is possibly a wiring or even a fuel gauge problem. The scan test will confirm which has failed so no money is lost on unnecessary replacement parts .. Test is pretty much bulletproof! .. Contact local auto repair facilities for scan test pricing - mention the reason for this test - you will not need a complete test of all modules - just fuel level / instrument cluster testing .. Repair shops scan tool should certainly be capable.
