We're in has a 3" crack in it still drives perfectly fine can it be rewelded?

It is a 2001 ford explorer sports trac. The vehicle drives perfectly fine no noise in the rear differential.It's a solid straight axle. The only problem is I have fluid leaking out of it closer to the u bolts. I would like to know if there is a way that it can be salvaged and only have the tubes cut off and re welded with new metal?
What makes this problem better or worse?
It's worse obviously when I'm driving because the fluid spraying out.
