Why is my Transmission Burning the fluid. not leaking just burning it?

There is nothing inside the transmission that can "burn" the fluid - like oil can "burn" in the cylinder walls of the engine and go out the exhaust. However, internal clutch wear and internal overheating of the transmission can create the "burned" smell, as burnt contaminants from internal transmission components are added to the fluid. This doesn't sound positive. New fluid definitely shouldn't smell burnt - was proper fluid used? Mercon V?
