Why does my vehicle's RPM idle high?

Recently the Service soon engine light came on. the following day of driving the vehicle, i noticed that the car idles high as if it ones to go on it's own when it is in Park gear. while driving the vehicle, it pulls forward and seems to want to stall. what is happening to my vehicle?
