I wonder, is it better to rebuild a vehicle or buy another newer used vehicle

I will never be able to spend 50K on a new Expedition... I have a 1999 and wonder what is the better route. Spend 15 to 17K on a newer used Expedition with around 100K miles or spend same amount on a rebuild with a crate motor
