Replaced ignition lock cylinder how to program the keys
1 Reply
Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Congrats on replacing the ignition lock cylinder on your Expedition! Now, let's get those keys programmed. Since your 1998 Ford Expedition uses a PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key, here's how to program it: 1. **Insert Original Key:** If you have two working original keys, insert the first original key into the ignition and turn it to the "ON" position for at least 3 seconds, but no more than 10 seconds. Then turn it back to "OFF" and remove the key. 2. **Insert Second Original Key:** Within 10 seconds of removing the first key, insert the second original key and turn it to the "ON" position for at least 3 seconds, but no more than 10 seconds. Turn it back to "OFF" and remove the key. 3. **Program New Key:** Within 20 seconds of removing the second original key, insert the new key you want to program and turn it to the "ON" position. Keep it in the "ON" position for about 6 seconds. Then turn it back to "OFF" and remove the key. If you don’t have two working keys, you’ll need to visit a dealer or a locksmith with the right equipment to program the new key for you. It’s a bit of a hassle, but it’s necessary to keep your Expedition secure. If you need more advice, have other questions, or need to find a certified repair shop in your area, just let me know!
