what are some possible causes of excessive oil consumption?

Bad valve guides or seal. you have also oil consuption from piston rings. according to the Ford Motor Company,there approximately 36,500 drops of oil in 1 quart.If the engine consume as little as 1/1100 of a drop of oil on each stroke,it would use 1 quart of oil in 1,000 miles.So you can see the fantastic job the oil rings and the major problem created when they are plugged up. there are other factors, such as: increase oil consuption after a valve job, because valve job increase compression, but also increases engine vacuum, which can cause more oil to be sucked past the worn rings...
