What does a pulse ring do in an automatic flexplate.

What is your question?

My mechanic says my flexplate is cracked and I need the kind with an Exciter as he called it. He says is makes the flywheel run by sending an electric signal. Is the pulse ring the same thing as an Exciter? Does the part he's talking about have different name?
