The problem occurs all the time. I was advised to change the speed sensor which would correct the problem. I replaced the speed sensor, but the problem is still the same.

I know this is an old post, but did you find out what the exact problem was? My 1998 escort is having the exact same problem. Speedometer and horn suddenly stopped working and the trans is now having trouble deciding what gear to go into. This all happened at the same time today. I was driving it around earlier today with no problems.
Your engine and trans are electronically controlled by a computer. If your speed sensort signal (VSS) is not present you should have a check engine (or trans) light on, I'd think. If the signal is simply not correct maybe not. If the check lighjt is on, it has set a trouble code and anyone with a scanner can tell you what the code is. It it's an intermittent failure it still may set a code. A bad VSS would likkely cause the problem you have. Be suspicious of the speed sensor in this case. I think the horn is not related but you should check the fuses, refer to the owner's manual for fuse info. don't try to diagnose any driveability problem if you haven't checked things like th fuses first.
had the same problem with mine. replace the speed sensor. got in drove it same problem. replaced the conector that plugs in on sensor fixed it. easy to do.
