How much should it cost to get a new alternator for my 1997 Ford Escort? Also, should I get credit for the old alternator?

I would say price is fair a well. I see both sides, I feel sorry for people with costs or repairs but a shop has to make a profit and not just break even otherwise they would not be able to stay in business. No need to gouge people but they do need to make a profit and charge the going rate not so much what the market will bare. Using quality parts is most important.
It will cost $120 to $160 if you do it yourself and you get a remanufactured alternator. This cost is after you get your 'core deposit' back on the old one you turn it. If you go to a shop to have it done it will of course cost a lot more.
Any repair shop does not charge you for a core. The price you paid is a fair price. I would ask what the warranty is on the new alternator.
$280 dollars at a shop for an alternator install is not too bad. He is charging about average amount for labor and he is not using a rebuilt alternator probably a new one. Considering new versus rebuilt the price is not that bad. No 'core deposits' on new installs only rebuilt ones.
Well, I actually already brought it to a shop & had it repaired. I need to go pick it up & the guy said it would be $280. This seemed wildly out of the ballpark so, I have been checking around. I do not think he is giving me credit for the old core & is trying to take advantage of me & I'm pissed. Do I say look give me my core deposit credit? He hasn't even mentioned that & I didn't even know about it until my Mothe rtold me & now you are saying that. Please let me know a.s.ap. cuz I have to go get my car. Thank you!
