I am presuming your car has a manual transmission. For a transmission to be able to change from one gear to another the drive/power from the engine must be "interrupted". This is what happens when you put your foot down on the clutch pedal, the clutch couples the power from the engine to the gear box when the clutch pedal is not depressed and interrupts the power from engine to the transmission when you press the pedal. If the clutch fluid leaks out of the clutch hydraulic components (clutch slave cylinder, clutch master cylinder, or clutch hose) pressure is not generated to allow this interruption of the transfer of power causing the grinding or difficulty in trying to change gears. Check the clutch fluid in reservoir if it is low you have a leak that must be repaired. Difficulty in selecting gears may also be a mechanical clutch problem or internal gear box problem but most likely a clutch hydraulic problem.
