What is your question?
Went to mechanic for overheating, exhaust smoke and error codes (P0420, P0299). After diagnosis, mechanic found coolant passing through combustion chamber, which potentially is causing catalytic converter error codes. Was told engine repair is non-existing, just get a new engine ($15K fix). Mechanic said that coolant leak isn't a head gasket issue (they tested). Question: is there any other way to fix this coolant leak issue other than getting a new engine (or a newer car)?

Hello, I’m Pete from the Car Genius team at RepairPal. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this concern on your Ford Escape. Depending on what type of failure or damage has occurred which is causing this issue with the coolant leaking into the combustion system, in many cases this can lead to an engine replacement if it is found that this is not a cylinder head gasket concern. A crack in a cylinder wall can cause this issue and if this is the cause then the engine itself would need to be replaced. It may be a good idea to have another shop look into this concern first before condemning the engine just to make sure that it does need to be replaced.
