Loud knocking on the top of engine when it first starts or excelerates.sound is intermitant.any ideas as to cause

Because the sound is intermittent, it makes me think of a piston problem, like the piston is too loose in the cylinder (piston slap) or the wrist pin is loose. It's also possible that there's a timing chain problem, like the chain is loose due to a faulty tensioner or adjustment. It helps us to know which engine you have.
