2002 Ford Escape - Checked at Auto zone, they show a misfire on #7. I'm about 40 miles from home. Will repair ASAP but need to get the car home.
What makes this problem better or worse?
runs smoother after it warms up.

Hello, you should drive the vehicle as absolutely little as possible. When you have a cylinder that is misfiring, assuming this is likely related to a lack of spark for some reason, fuel continues to be supplied to the cylinder, and washes down cylinder walls of the engine and goes into the exhaust stream, causing internal engine concerns and leading to excessively high temperatures of the catalytic converter. High temperatures in the converter can lead to premature failure of this expensive component.
