What is your question?
We thought that my car was leaking oil so I was slowly adding more oil since my car was previously overheating. The problem was the electric fans and once that was fixed, my husband went to change my oil and it filled up a 12qt bucket, but my car runs fine.

Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Running with 12 quarts of oil—double the recommended capacity—is like trying to swim with a weighted vest: bad for performance and potentially catastrophic. Overfilling can foam the oil, as the crankshaft churns it like a blender. Foamy oil loses its ability to lubricate, leading to increased engine wear and overheating. Oil can also seep past seals and gaskets under excess pressure, potentially causing leaks, fouled spark plugs, or damage to the catalytic converter. While it’s a miracle your Edge is still running fine, long-term overfilling can do serious harm. Drain the excess ASAP and monitor for issues like oil leaks or odd noises. If it’s been months, consider an inspection to make sure no lasting damage was done.
