It does not shift into drive right away. I have to pump the gas a bunch

So the shifter goes into drive normally but it doesn't engage 1st gear right away? Just want to be clear. Alex

First thing to check is the trans fluid level. If you are low you will have a delayed engagement especially when the fluid is low. It gets better as it heats up as it expands. Alex
